Smell is one of the greater triggers for memories. And based on that scientific fact, we decided to give you some DIY ideas for home-made fragrances for this Christmas. The aroma of a place can take you miles away without you even lifting a finger or setting foot outside your living room. The important thing here is to choose fragrances that are somehow related to you and would make you reminisce of your childhood or other happy times. You could of course, rely on classic flavours like vanilla, cinnamon, sugary apples, berries, clove and cardamom etc.
All the Christmas aromas such as ginger and star anise are somehow automatically making us worm and dreamy… and hungry. If you want to scent the whole place you could put all the spices next to a candle or in between them or hang them in ball above the fireplace, so that they can give away scent due to the warmth.
Another way to make your home smell like Christmas is to put an essential oil lamps around. They’re made from ceramics and are safe to use, but you really want to check the origin of the oils you’re using. In fact you could put almost any spice you use for the traditional Christmas cookies in your oil lamp and you’ll have the same effect. You can also combine some rosemary and marjoram together with some orange peels to pamper your senses.
Home-made soap is a trendy and quite handy item for scenting a room or a drawer. A cool idea is to scent the Christmas tree, how? Well, you just need some caramel slices of orange and some cinnamon and hang them instead of Christmas globes. Make garlands of Christmas cookies and sugar canes- fun and tasty!
Remember, scents need warmth to spread, so keep the fire running in the fireplace the whole Christmas!
